Campaign Finance Reform

Citizens United has taken our country away from the people and turned it over to the corporations.

Citizens United has taken our country away from the people and turned it over to the corporations.

It’s been 8 years since the Supreme Court issued its outrageous decision in Citizens United (2010), overturning the already flimsy campaign finance protections afforded under McCain-Feingold. The case opened the floodgates to billions of dollars perverting our elections, much of it completely unreported, and some coming from foreign corporations and governments. The Court literally legalized bribery, and wealthy individuals & special interests took advantage of it.  As shameful as that decision is, we must confront the sobering reality that it is only the tip of the iceberg. A small ruling elite have stolen control of the country, and they are ruling over us. They use the façade of elections to legitimize the theft. And even when decent legislation is enacted, they use the Courts to overturn those laws. Citizens United is merely a deepening of the crisis of corporate rule.

At the crux of the crisis are two core legal doctrines: One is “corporate personhood,” a court-created precedent that illegitimately gives corporations rights that were intended for human beings. The other is “money equals free speech.” An amendment to the US Constitution is the only lasting solution to this problem, and MUST address both false doctrines.

When I get to Washington, I will fight to return America to a democracy of the people, by the people, for the people, by pushing to overturn Citizens United and by promoting a constitutional amendment that will state what should be obvious - corporations are not people, and money is not free speech!

When I get to Washington, I will:

  • Fight to pass a Constitutional Amendment that Congress has power to regulate money in elections, that abolishes all rights wrongly granted to corporations, that says money does not equal free speech. With the passage of Prop 59 last year, California voters asked their state elected officials to use their authority to work on overturning Citizens United. Move to & are groups of grassroots democracy advocates dedicated to ending corporate rule.  I signed their pledge to promise I will do everything I can, once elected, to overturn Citizens United per California voters wishes.
  • Fight for transparency in campaign financing - the SEC should require companies to disclose to shareholders spending for political activities, and prevent foreign entities like Russia from pouring money into US elections
  • Fight to eliminate super PACS - Super PACs should be banned, and a clean public financing system should be implemented to end the takeover of our government by corporations and billionaires. Americans deserve free and fair elections — free from the corruption of big money donors.
